Chapter Forty Eight

It was the night of the Captain’s Gala Dinner on the Paradise. It’s a tradition for the Captain on the night before the last one at sea to host a festive affair to remember. The chefs put together the elaborate menu that includes caviar, lobster, pheasant, escargot, beef wellington, and even cold strawberry cream soup. The wine flows freely to accommodate any dish and any taste. Invitations to sit at the Captain’s table and share a meal were sent to the special guests and it is considered to be an ultimate honor. No one declines such an invitation.

Peter Anderson was holding a fine piece of the stationary that was intended to produce an extreme aesthetic pleasure on the person it had been addressed to. It was the invitation to the Captain’s Table for tonight. “The Captain of Paradise cordially invites Mr. and Mrs. Anderson to dine with him on Sunday, at 6:30 pm. Please meet at 6:00 at the Deck #8 elevators for Pre Dinner Cocktails in the Captain’s Cabin; from there we will escort you to the Dining Room. Dress: Formal or Jacket and Tie.”

Mr. Anderson, as he was called in the invitation, was a freelance reporter. Rather prominent among the brothers of the quill, he sold his investigative articles to The National Enquirer, Star, The Globe, and the National Examiner. Even Time Magazine had published his materials about Monica Lewinsky and Chandra Levy. He had a fine tuned nose for scandals and knew how to serve them with just enough spice to keep attention of the reader. The magazines bought his articles with great desire; some of them even commissioned him to do special assignments. He was making a comfortable living with his writing, never had arguments with his conscience, and honestly believed that he was doing great job for society at large. He discovered vacations on cruise ships a few years ago and it had become his preferred way to relax.

He had always wanted to get invited to the Captain’s Table. They say you had to befriend a social hostess in order to get on the list. Peter Anderson thought he was famous enough to get the invitation without the stupid small talk with a “nobody.” His snobbish self didn’t allow him to ask for the invitation and his celebrity pride was suffering from a lack of proper recognition.

“I got it! I finally got it! And without begging for it. It’s about time.” He was very content. Now he needed to find his wife and tell her the news. She will be happy too. She had consistently packed a designer dress for such an occasion but never had a chance to wear it. Tonight will be the night.

He hoped to talk to the Captain about the murder on board. He already called The National Examiner and told them about the potential story. They were eager to see his article. All day he was trying to get the scoop on the events. He was a professional, after all.
